Urine, saliva, and fingerprint drug testing answer those two questions differently.

The Three Screening Methods
Urine testing is the method everyone is familiar with. A donor provides a urine sample under supervision, and the sample is screened on-site. Urine screening tests detect drug use over a long period (4 days from use or even longer for habitual cannabis use).
Saliva testing, also called oral fluid testing, collects a sample from the mouth using a swab. It detects more recent use (up to 2 days) but requires a short pre-test period during which the donor must not eat, drink, or smoke.
Fingerprint drug testing analyses sweat from the fingertips. The donor presses their fingertips onto a single-use cartridge, which is analysed on-site by a portable reader. It focuses on recent use, with a detection window of up to 16–24 hours.

What Each Criterion Means for You
What the Result Tells You
This is the single most important distinction. A method with a shorter detection window gives a stronger indication of recent use. This speaks to whether someone is fit for duty today. Operational Disruption
A urine test can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 4 hours once you count collection, supervision, and delays caused by things like shy bladder syndrome. Saliva takes up to 20 minutes, including the pre-test wait. Fingerprint testing takes less than ten minutes. The difference shows up as downtime: people waiting, a supervisor tied up, and a shift disrupted.
On-Site Capability
Some methods can be run anywhere. Others cannot. Urine testing requires access to a private restroom and gender-specific staff. Saliva and fingerprint testing need no dedicated facilities. This matters for operations with multiple sites, remote staff, or round-the-clock shift patterns, where a method that relies on a fixed facility is difficult to apply consistently across all locations.
Supervision & Collection
Urine testing calls for same-gender collectors and, where sample integrity is a concern, observed collection. Saliva testing needs a supervisor to oversee the pre-test period. Fingerprint drug testing is simple and fully observable. The donor presses their fingertips onto the cartridge in front of the tester, without the need for a pre-screening wait period or gender-specific staff.
Hygiene & Waste
Urine and saliva samples are biohazardous. They require careful handling and clinical waste disposal. This adds to process time and costs. Fingerprint sweat is not a biohazardous waste. The used cartridge can go in the normal waste stream, so collection stays clean and simple.
Dignity & Acceptance
Perception and acceptance both affect how well a programme runs. Urine collection is widely seen as intrusive, saliva slightly less so, and fingerprint collection is completely non-invasive.
Tamper Resistance
A test is only useful if you can trust the result. If a sample can be faked, the whole programme is open to challenge. Urine is the most susceptible to adulteration and substitution, which is why observed collection exists. Saliva is harder to interfere with, but not impossible. Fingerprint testing is tamper-resistant by design: the sample is collected under direct observation, and the single-use cartridge locks shut with a tamper-evident cover, so there is no practical opportunity to adulterate or substitute it.

Which Method is the Right Choice?
Urine testing is the strongest choice when you need a longer detection window. This suits organisations whose policy is specifically concerned with use over several days, or where a regulated regime specifies an established evidential process. Saliva sits in the middle. It provides a more recent picture than urine, but collection can still be delayed by dry mouth, which slows the process when a donor cannot readily provide a sample.
Fingerprint testing is the strongest choice when the priority is recent use and fitness for duty. It works best when testing has to run across multiple (or remote) sites, varied shift patterns, when disruption must be kept to a minimum, or where dignity and acceptance are a priority.
Accuracy, Screening & Confirmation
All three methods utilise the same science: a lateral flow immunoassay that detects specific drugs or their metabolites. Studies show fingerprint testing is just as accurate as urine and saliva.

Laboratory Confirmation
The screening test is only half the picture, and this principle protects every employer, regardless of the method they choose. An on-site test gives a screening result, not a confirmed one. A non-negative screening result indicates possible recent drug use. It is not a “positive”; it should never be recorded as one, and no action should be taken on a screening result alone. Only a laboratory accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) can confirm a screening result, using a technique such as liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS).
